Fire extinguisher AS1851.2005

We often receive this question.

Hi Fiona,

Am I able to leave the Level 4 test of my fire extinguishers for another 6 / 12 months ? I don\’t see the point in getting this done.

Cheers,

Tony

Answer from Melbourne Fire and Electrical

Hi Tony,

Thanks for the question. Victoria adopted AS1851.2005 as the maintenance standard for extinguishers in all buildings.  The short answer to your question, about whether you need to undertake a 5 yearly pressure test, is YES.

AS1851 requires a Level 4 inspection every 5 years. The technician pressure tests the extinguisher to confirm that it is intact and operational. They remove, test, and inspect all components that the team cannot examine.

Remember to install extinguishers according to AS2444:2001, AS1940:2004 for flammable or combustible liquids, and AS1596:2008 for LPG gas storage. This configuration does not exclude the responsibilities that you would have under the requirements of the MFB under GL16.

Can MFE help?

Please give us a call today if you are located in the CBD, inner suburbs, Western or Northern Melbourne suburbs. We would love to chat about your Level 4 extinguisher inspections or replacement needs.
